Sri Lankan tourism faced a big challenge with the latest #EasterSundayAttack in Sri Lanka on last 21st of April 2019 at Colombo, Kochchikade St. Anthony’s Shrine, Negombo, Katuwapitiya, St. Sebastian Church, Batticaloa Zion Church, The Kingsbury Colombo Hotel, Shangri-la Colombo Hotel & Cinnamon Grand Hotel. Further, There was a blast at Tropical Inn Dehiwala and Three storeys Safe house in Dematagoda.
Around 250 people were killed and 700+ wounded in these serial bombing. To now, USA, UK, India and many countries have issued #NoGo warning to prevent from all visits to Sri Lanka excluding unavoidable travels. Sadly, China was the first country who issued #Trave_Ban “Immediately” on visits to Sri Lanka for their citizens while some #SriLankan Politicians recognized as true friend. Meanwhile, in the bottom line, there was significance growth on Chinese tourist arrivals during last decade. Further, Sri Lanka was receiving overall significant tourist arrivals without concerning season / off-season as they did have previously. Sri Lankan tourism was on rocket growth and industry was preparing for 3 million+ tourist arrivals yearly and wasn’t too far to 5 million per year.
Meanwhile, Indian tourists arrivals also throttled in considerable numbers and Country was declared as the Top tourist destination of the World for 2019 by Lonely Planet. Being #1 wasn’t just a simple step and it was a decade long journey after get rid off the terrorism in 2009.
Lots of infrastructure built by Government and Private Sectors. Leading International Hoteliers like Shangri-la, OZO and local market leaders like Jetwing, Cinnamon invested in lots of brand new and renovated properties to welcome continuous guests arrivals. Many International Airlines like KLM, British Airways and few other leading airlines came to Sri Lanka for brand new start after 2009.
Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) took steps to introduce Home stay concepts, Tuk Tuk rides and many excursions. And Central Province tourism (DTCTCP) who have 4 out of 8 UNESCO world heritages, already begun lots of activities including Qualified Tour Guide Training, Kandy Nigh Bazar, Tourism Information Centres ect. Further, Country could introduce New Tourism Police Division for assistance to Tourists.
All the lights were green and Local and Foreign Investments were attracted by Sri Lanka. More human resources were offered by various private and government sector schools and colleges related tourism and travel. As a traveler around the World, I could rate Sri Lankan human resources in Travel & tourism Industry are World Class.
Unfortunately, 10 Years works have gone in-vain. Above all the industries, Tourism Industry related people shocked and disappointed. I had a field visit to talk with tourists who remaining after the attack and tourists who visited Sri Lanka after the attack. I hope to bring you a special report with their comments.
I recently heard that Japan have announced to their citizens to prevent from visiting Sri Lanka unless there is an unavoidable matter. Still we don’t know about the security. Apparently public safety is guaranteed by armed forces. But the alert wasn’t ended.
Archbishop Office of Roman Catholic and one Chapter of Buddhists Authority have issued warning messages to Press recently about further development of attacks.
