I bet you have heard about the very famous movie, “Angels & Demons” based on the very famous book of Dan Brown. I could come across a unique place in Kandy City, Hill Capital of “Sri Lanka”. Sri Lanka is an island nation just below the Indian Continent.

Colombo is the capital of Sri Lanka and You can arrive to the Colombo via CMB (BIA) Colombo Airport. Central part of the Island is mountain areas from 500m to 2500m. Kandy is the biggest city in Central Hills of this Island Nation. Kandy is an ancient city which was used as the capital of country when the Royals ruled this country. There are still Royal Palaces and heritage monuments out there to visit and experience the glory.

City and the Demon Hills

The Kandy City is a Plateau and a natural fortress. And this city area is completely surrounded by very high mountains. There are four main gaps which only available access to the city. Now they are fully fledged by modern highways. Demon Hill is small scary mountain. Even today, it is covered with some forest cover. It can be reached with 5-10 minutes drive from the city centre.

Demon Hills History

This mountain was called demon hill as it’s thick forest cover in the past and folks believed that devils and demons live out there in Mountain. Even kings have used this area for killings of prisoners.

Story of My visit

Here in this story, I am explaining about one of two scary legend of this hill. Watch the full video for listen the scary story.

Monastery

Today we can see a peaceful monastery with great people. There’s a very big statue of The Buddha which is clearly and closely visible to the City. You can use the staircase attached to the Statue to go to highest point of hill and buildings which enable a great view of Kandy City.

View Point

From this hill, it is very easy to see completely 360 degrees view of Kandy City in Sri Lanka. You can clearly see Kandy Milky Way Lake, The Royal Palace, Bogambara Prison which was built by British Rulers and the perfect picturesque view of Hanthana Mountain Range.

Monks and the Monastery

A Buddhist monks are remaining peacefully in the temple and all are welcome to the monastery to see or experience their traditions all the day. I met few monks and one was helping a dog to having a cold bath in the bright hot sunlight in tropical Sri Lanka. Those Buddhist monks welcome villagers to practice Buddhist rituals that interconnected with village life. No matter how close to the second largest city in Sri Lanka. The Demon’s Hill is so calm and looks like a village. House are being built on hills and it’s a completely hill village.

Accessibility to the Hills and Monastery

There is no associated fee to entre village or monastery. Roads are steep. You will need a proper condition vehicle to enter. But, this area can be accessed by any sort of vehicle from motor bike, tuk tuk to small bus. Vehicle need to be operated in fine conditions to follow the gap. Even if you like, I can recommend you to walk even from Kandy City. You can follow google map to ease your way.

Warning!

When you are roaming around Kandy City, there’s a warning to be made for your own safety. Kandy is not a place to hire a vehicle without proper meter. Even there is no many tuk tuks or cars with taxi meter. Best bet is getting a tuk tuk or vehicle via Uber. There is a local alternative for Uber, it is PickMe. PickMe app is found in Appstore and Playstore. It is the country’s number one. And there are few other local apps as well. In Kandy, even locals are being ripped off by taxi drivers with very high taxi fairs. There are taxi stands within city including near railway station, bust station, shopping centres and temples. Beware from those guys. At least try to negotiation the price before get in if they don’t have a taxi meter or app.
