Netherlands traffic policy is friendly to cycling than private automobiles. Many infrastructures have been developed for cycling. The average kid who reaches their 2nd or 3rd birthday will get a bicycle for their personal use. In the video, I said it’s age 12 and I got to know that some kids get their bicycle and riding skill just after their walking skills. In other words, Cycling is Walking to Dutch People. Not like in other countries, they do not wear helmets if not the rider is a racer. Once I disclose the major reason, you will understand the helmet tradition as well.

World’s Largest Underground Bicycle park is also located in Utrecht, Netherlands. It can facilitate more than 12 thousand bikes. Not only traditional standard form bicycles, but also they have very specific bikes for various matters. Dutch commuter bikes are very special and they are very comfortable. You can see it clearly in the first picture of this article. No crossbar between seat and the handle. It is helpful to get down easily. And they long-lasting productive bike culture. If you have kids to travel with, they have special carriages. Some Dutch people make jokes at US people that they have School buses and Dutch have school bicycles.

Average Adult Dutch makes 1,000 kilometres per year by paddling a bicycle. And a Teenager makes double it around 2,000 km per year. After I published the video, I got some comments about the real experiences of people. They said some people travel around 10,000 km per year.

Not only average citizens but also Dutch Prime Ministers also have involved in riding bicycles to go to work and it is very popular around the world.

If you are from the Netherlands, tell us whether actually Dutch PM ride bikes every day? Let us know in the comments. Let’s back to the major reason, why Dutch People love cycling. As we discussed, there many more trends and motivations for cycling in the Netherlands.

The Netherlands is a nearly flat country compare to many other countries. In Video I did mention the country name as “Holland” by mistake. The reason is my Grandma does have lots of friends and family members from the Netherlands. She got used to saying “Holland” not the Netherlands. And the country where I live right now had colonial time with Dutch. Local people use a word called “Olandians”. So I was using this word mistakenly for a long period. Even I have lots of Dutch friends. They didn’t even bother to remind this before. So, now I realized that Holland is just a part of the country.

Why bicycles are the most popular commuter method in the Netherlands?

In The Netherlands not many big mountains and steep roads which it makes difficult to deal with cycling. So, flat land is very friendly for bikes and you never get tired of riding hard to move upwards and riding with danger downwards. You will think that sloppy roads are easy to ride but they are hazardous.

And the Netherlands does have perfect weather year-round. Summer only reaches around 22 degrees Celsius and the average is always much colder and not very sunny to burn you to crisp. (but the weather is much hotter than I anticipated by average. But still great as blowing winds to get rid of sweat) Flat, cold, and cycling-friendly roads are the best motivation to cycling in the Netherlands and it offers two other benefits.

Extra: I got to know there were protests against motorized cars in the early 70s and 60s as many cyclists died including children by road accidents. That trend has played a big role in converting the Netherlands to cycling-friendly & pedestrian-friendly commuter system.

Cycling is a healthy option. It is bringing a more healthy lifestyle to you. You will need no more exercise to maintain your beautiful body. And cycling is greener than green.

Many try to blame others for eating meat, endless air travel, and even at electric car industries. But the Netherlands has started without waiting for anyone else. That makes the Netherlands unique and it is a big contribution to their tourism industry too. You can simply rent a bike and ride as much as you need to explore the Netherlands. It will cost around 8 euros per day.

So be like Dutch People…
