A Passenger cruise with 700 people onboard has sailed to the Bahamas instead of their originally planned destination to Miami. The Crystal Symphony cruise ship was scheduled to dock in Miami, Florida on Saturday (22/Sat/2022) after a two-week-long Caribbean cruise but changed course after a US judge granted an order to seize the vessel as part of a lawsuit involving $4.6m (£3.4m) in unpaid fuel bill.

According to the Independant.co.uk report, the ship is currently docked on the island of Bimini in the Bahamas. “Ride was uncomfortable due to inclement weather”, says the spokesperson of Crystal Cruises Company, which owned the cruise liner.

Stephen Heard Fales, one of the passengers, wrote on Facebook that the experience felt as if “we were abducted by luxurious pirates.”

Further, the Independent reported explaining passenger experience,

Musician Elio Pace, who boarded the ship on Tuesday in Dominica, told The Independent he had just finished a rehearsal on Friday when he was informed an arrest warrant had been issued for the ship.

As per the arrest warrant issued last Thursday (20/Jan/2022), a US Marshal could have taken charge of the vessel once it enters the US waters and still they can.

Currently, 400 crew is onboard and some of the 300 passengers were taken by ferry to Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale on Sunday while others were left scrambling to rebook travel arrangements.

Later, all the passengers have been transported from Port Lauderdale to Miami by shuttles.

The crew is remaining on board and the company is apparently scheduling their flights back to their original countries.

Continued Independent Report,

“There was literally eight seconds of silence, nobody could say anything. It was almost laughable… we literally just said ‘are you kidding?’

“No one could believe that this ship was having to divert away from US waters like a pirate ship away so it didn’t get arrested,” he said.

The lawsuit was filed in a Miami federal court by Peninsula Petroleum Far East against the ship under the maritime procedure for allegedly owing $4.6m in fuel bills.

The Independent.co.uk has revealed the true owner of the ship.

Crystal Cruises’ parent company Genting Hong Kong said this week it had “exhausted all reasonable efforts” to settle millions of dollars outstanding fuel bills and would be ceasing operations.

Genting Hong Kong is controlled by Malaysian tycoon Lim Kok Thay, whose Genting Group is described as “one of Asia’s leading and best-managed multinationals” with interests in leisure and hospitality, plantations, property and biotechnology.

Crystal announced Wednesday (19/Jan/2022) that its three vessels currently in operation – Crystal Symphony, Crystal Serenity and the line’s new expedition vessel, Crystal Endeavor – will cease operations. Passengers will disembark and will be flown home from Miami, Aruba, and Ushuaia, Argentina.

However, Crystal is only temporarily pausing its operations into the spring – at least for now. Ocean sailings are cancelled through April 29, 2022.

So while itineraries beyond April 29, 2022, remain available, the future of the company is not guaranteed at this point, unless an investor were to financially rescue the line.
