New Silicon Valley in Milan, Italy. Europe’s Silicon Valley in Milan, Italy. Europe’s Silicon Valley has started its operations?
After six-year rest, the abandoned Great Milano Expo city is about to rebuild in a different shape for futuristic Italy. Italian Fashion Capital and the business capital, Milan is planning to another huge groundbreaking step to boost entire Europe in an American style tech revolution. Not just a plan, they already started to implement some of the significant parts. (That story at the end)
Milano Innovation District – MIND would be a € 4.5 Billion Euro or US$ 5.1 Billion Dollar technology project to facilitate Europe’s own silicon valley. Milano Expo city is Europe’s largest urban vacant land during last size years and it is estimated as big as twice of Vatican City. A research lab, startup accelerator and a science campus would be added to the project.
The “MIND” will occupy housing and working space for 60,000 people, including accommodation for 3,000 students. One of the longest linear parks in Europe will connect everything along the main “decumano”. The name is a pointed reference to the East-West corridor in the city planning of ancient Rome. As per my idea, Italy is a living museum and they are trying to keep it that way.
As there is no way out from the futuristic tech-based economy, every country and every region should be prepared for the best and worst. Europe doesn’t seem that ready for the future when it is compared to the rest of the World. The rest of the World means the United States where the centre of tech. world, China the platform of the tech, India the workforce of the Tech, UAE-South Korea-Japan where the tech was adopted as a child.
Italy’s new move may help Europe to outcome from the comfort zone to compete with the World.
The entire project will be planned as a green city concept. The district will be a car-free zone. A high-speed transit system will be linked to Milano’s public transportation system. A second metro station will be operational by 2025. The complete area will be run by renewable energy. 98% of available materials will be recycled and some of the pavilions will be saved for reuse. Meanwhile, office buildings may build with timber.
Already, more than 100 scientific staff are at work at the Human Technopole, a research institute for life science. Employees of World Famous British Pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca Plc just moved to their new Italian headquarters within the district. A facility for U.S. genome-sequencing company Illumina Inc. is opening in the spring. Also, a 16-story hospital will start operating in September of 2022 as it is the first priority according to the lessons that just learned.
