Air India, the National Flag Carrier of India has notified its cabin crew not to visit Duty-Free ships prior to their flights.

Air India has asked its cabin crew members to keep their jewellery in a very minimalist way to avoid “any delays at customs and security checks” prior to their flights. They have also been told not to “visit duty-free shops”. They have been asked to proceed to the boarding gate just after completing immigration and security checks to make sure that flights do not get delayed.

Further, the cabin crew has also been advised not to consume beverages or have food prior to or during guest boarding and assist in swift boarding and seating of guests in the cabin.

The order has come just a couple of weeks after Indian conglomerate Tata Sons took Air India into private ownership for the first time in decades. The Indian government has been trying to offload the loss-making carrier for decades with their “government management” and its new owners are focusing on some quick fixes to turn Air India back to the correct route.

TATA Groups is looking for very short period improvements until popping up big things like new aircraft and/or upgraded cabin interiors etc. Under that plan, they have two things in hand to improve the experience fast.

The first one is to take On-Time Performances (OTP). One delay in the early morning can cause dozens of delays later in the day. So, the above decisions about Cabin Crew were the result of that OTP forcing plan. To maintain punctuality is group work and the Dispatchers, the Engineering crew and the weather (which is not able to handle) need to cooperate with each other.

The second one is apparently the enhancing meal services. In recent years, Air India announced that they only serve vegetarian meals for domestic flights economy class. That policy may badly affect the reputation of the airline when foreign tourists are travelling domestically. India is a sub-continent with widely spread tourist attractions. Air travel is a convenient way for foreign tourists to travel throughout the country. We believe that the economy class non-veg meals will be resumed with these new improvement plans.
