Fall or Autumn, it’s the same thing or more accurately a season that we encounter once a year.

the season after summer and before winter, in the northern hemisphere from September to November and in the southern hemisphere from March to May.

Definition of Autumn or Definition of Fall

But there are some huge differences between these names and how they influence different parts of the World. In addition to the word different, has lots of contextual differences as a result of cultural and geographical factors.

Why do we have four seasons?

If we didn’t have this tilted position, every country will have a similar kind of climate throughout the year as some tropical countries do.

As the Earth has a 22.5 degrees tilt and it goes around the Sun, we have seasons. Otherwise, all countries will have a straightforward climate throughout the year as some tropical countries got all summer temperatures. And Europe and most cold areas will stay cold forever. So, this 22.5 degrees angle made our lives much better. We have four major seasons in any given year.

  • From September to November it’s Autumn/Fall.
  • From December to February, it’s Winter.
  • From March to May, it’s Spring.
  • From June to August, it’s Summer.

Each season carries its own characteristics. And I am missing something that someone would wonder about. Most of these writings are based in the North hemisphere. Countries like Australia, New Zealand, South American nations and Africa may experience something different. But, we do not make our attention to these regions as they were not clearly conducting traditions to experience season since the ancient time. At least I don’t know about their existing traditions.

What is Fall?

“The term “fall” was most likely derived from the Old English terms “fiaell” and “feallan,” which both imply “to fall from a great height.” It is thought that the season’s new name was inspired by the falling leaves of trees. However, this term heavily influences New England or the New World which is today’s the United States of America. Americans are famous for their easy breezy language upgrades.

As we can see lots of falling leaves in this season, Americans might pick this word as their formal way of knowing the season. So, if you refer to this season as “Fall”, you probably speak American English.
