10 most sustainable fashion brands in the World

Do you know the most sustainable fashion brands across the World? Fashion brands are frequently targeted by critics over their less impact to support the planet and be sustainable. So we believe that sustainability is something beyond environmentally friendly. So, I did a little research and brought Top 10 Sustainable Brands in the world.

If you are concerned about the impact of your purchase, this guide will help you to choose from the top brands and/or to have a review on your favourite brand which is not here. Maybe your favourite brand is also sustainable and supportive of the planet. After reviewing the top 10 and their initiatives, you can easily measure if your favourite brand is also following the same and be self-satisfied that you are buying from a sustainable brand even though it didn’t make it to the Top 10.

So, let’s go through the top 10 I noticed that the most of best Sustainable brands are recently started other than centuries-old brands. The majority of brands here were started after 2000 A.D. and few between 1970 A.D. – 1999 A.D.

Sirplus Clothing

Sirplus is a British menswear company founded in 2010 by Henry Hales. Their yearly revenue is around 5 million US Dollars. This young company has implemented a closed-loop supply chain to make sure that their impact on nature is decreased as much as they can. It means they are involved in manufacturing fabric to collect used garments at the end of their lifecycle. They use Sirplus fabrics that are sourced leftovers from other garment manufacturers. By doing that, they could minimize the environmental impact of other brands as well. In addition to “Sirplus Fabric”, they also use organic cotton, recycled polyester and more fabrics that are produced in a sustainable way. As they implement a closed-loop supply chain, they could recycle their own old garments to make new garments.

Beyond that, the Sirplus Clothing brand is also popular for “Pre-Loved” garments. They also sell used garments after thorough cleaning and refurbishing processes at a discounted price to motivate people to buy more from the “Pre-loved” section. It is contributing to reducing energy, water and waste involved in the fashion industry. Sirplus Clothing was recognized with several awards and appreciation for its effort and it is one of the top 100 sustainable brands in the world by Corporate Knights in 2019.

Saye

Saye is a Spanish footwear brand that was founded by Daniel Pérez and Luis González in 2015. Saye is based in Barcelona, Spain with 10 million US Dollars in yearly revenue for now. Both founders are really passionate about sustainable and environmentally friendly quality footwear and Saye was born as a sustainable brand.

Saye Footwear offers the best premium-grade products while keeping its commitment to the planet. They have a fair trade factory in Portugal to meet their social responsibility standards in addition to the environmental standards. Using recycled materials and sustainable materials is the key to producing sustainable and premium footwear in their course. And “Saye Footwear” is a carbon-neutral company. It means the company offsets its carbon emission in manufacturing and transporting products. They offer a product called “Vegan bio-based Snickers. Even though I am not sure of the meaning of it, you are free to find the standards of Vegan shoes.

Cuyana

Cuyana is an American sustainable fashion brand that produces accessories and clothing. Cuyana was founded by Karla Gallardo and Shilpa Shah in 2011. This company is based in San Francisco, California, United States with 20 million US Dollars in yearly revenue. Cuyana’s mission is to produce sustainable and long-lasting fashion accessories and clothing to offer a seamless experience to their customers and support the planet at the same time. In addition to using recycling materials, fair trade factories and closed-loop supply chains, Cuyana has some specialities on their course to achieve their mission.

Cuyana is producing small batches of products to reduce waste. Most of their products are repairable and it means long lasting that helps to waste problems. Also, Cuyana is working with local sustainable development NGOs to bring more initiatives to nature and society as they believe that Sustainability is a complex concept other than just being environmentally friendly. Also, Cuyana is a member of the sustainable apparel coalition, an organization of sustainable fashion brands.

Isabelle Fox

Isabelle Fox is a British luxury fashion brand based in London. They produce classic, chic clothing for women and reach 25 million US Dollars yearly revenue. The brand was founded by a Grandma and a Granddaughter duo, Isabelle and Imogen Fox in 2015. The brand is producing high-quality selected garments in England and is available to purchase from selected textile houses in UK and Online. Their target customer base is in UK and Europe. To support the sustainable fashion industry, Isabelle Fox has taken certain actions on their business model. They use Organic cotton that is manufactured without using harmful pesticides and chemical fertilizers. They manufacture their products within UK borders to reduce the carbon emission of transportation. They use recyclable packing to reduce waste. And also they have ethical labour practices to make sure that their social responsibility is fulfilled.

Thought Clothing

Thought Clothing is a British clothing brand that produces men’s and women’s wear since 1995. Their variety brand reaches at least 50 million US Dollars in yearly revenue. They produce high-quality “Made in UK” garments. They do not have their own outlets anywhere and they only supply to fashion houses or customers can buy online from their website. The majority of their products are made in the UK and used in the UK.

The brand uses only sustainable materials like Organic Cotton, Recycled Polyester, Tencel and so on. They only produce their garments in the UK and it reduces the transportation emission. Also, the company really cares about water usage in their productions and has taken multiple parameters to reduce it. And they support and practice ethical labour policies. Every year “Thought Clothing” issues an annual report about its sustainable initiatives, results and progress to keep its policies transparent.

Tentree

Tentree is a Canadian brand that was founded by two friends called Kalen Emsley and David Luba. The company was founded in 2011 in Vancouver, Canada to produce men women and children’s wear. The company’s yearly revenue is close to 100 million US Dollars and apparently, they had an idea to become a sustainable fashion brand since the very beginning by judging the name of the company.

Tentree’s mission is simple. Their commitment is to plant 10 trees for every item of clothing that is sold. The brand has planted over 50 million trees to date, and they are committed to planting 1 billion trees by 2030. In addition to the brand’s straightforward policy, they also use sustainable materials like Organic cotton, recycled polyester and Tencel to produce sustainable products. And also they have a fair labour policy. Yearly they issue a report on their progress on sustainability initiatives to keep transparency.

Tentree is a Certified B Corporation, which means that the brand meets high standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.

Allbirds

Allbirds is an American footwear brand that was founded in 2016 by Tim Brown and Joey Zwillinger in San Francisco, California, United States. The company’s annual revenue is said 150 million US Dollars. Allbirds is a true inspiration that changed the dimensions of footwear standards. They have a reputation for producing quality comfortable footwear from sustainable materials.

Allbirds uses a mindblowing variety of sustainable materials in its shoes, including merino wool, eucalyptus fibre, and sugarcane.
They confirm that these materials are all produced in a more sustainable way than traditional materials, such as leather and synthetic fabrics. Also, they use water-saving machines and also they use recycled water for their dyeing process. Also, Allbirds has an option for customers to return their used shoes and the company would recycle or upcycle those products. The company is trying to reduce their carbon footprint by offsetting their carbon emission. They are expected to become a carbon-neutral company by 2030. They also issue an annual report about their sustainable initiatives.

Outerknown

Outerknown is an American fashion brand which was founded by World Famous Surf Champion Kelly Slater. The Brand was established in 2015 in California, United States and currently making 250 million US Dollars yearly in revenue. The brand produces varieties of men’s and women’s wear while committing to stay as a sustainable brand.

The company uses sustainable materials such as Organic cotton, recycled polyester, Tencel and hemp. Also, they initiated a circularity commitment to enhance recycling or upcycling abilities. They have introduced a take-back programme to make customers return their unusable old garments. Also, the company has fair labour policies to make sure their social responsibilities are fulfilled. Their annual sustainable report shows and keeps their initiatives transparent as well.

Everlane

Everlane is a famous brand for its “direct-to-consumer” policy in the fashion and clothing industry. So they have cut off the middle man and they could give a significant price drop for the customers because of their policy compared to other similar reputed fashion brands. Everlane is an American fashion brand which was founded by Michael Preysman in 2011. This company is based in San Fransisco, California, United States and said yearly revenue is close to 400 million US Dollars.

The company uses sustainable materials such as organic cotton, recycled polyester, Tencel and more to produce their garments. Also, they have fair labour practices and special initiatives to reduce water usage etc. The company’s annual sustainable report shows progress and it’s a good sign of transparency. They also have a take-back programme to recycle or upcycle old Everlane products. Everlane’s speciality is the pricing policy. By cutting off the middle traders are reducing transportation and sales process impact that leads to a lower carbon footprint.

Patagonia

Patagonia is an American outdoor garment company that serves globally as a pioneer fashion brand. Patagonia is the most sustainable fashion brand in the world as of July 2023 with 779.6 million US Dollars yearly revenue. Since the beginning of the brand in 1973, they build their business based on sustainable policies. They use recycled materials, minimize water consumption in their production process and also support sustainable farming policies through their supply chains. With their effort, they could be successful in the fashion industry while supporting the planet with their best.

Patagonia Inc is based in Ventura, California, United States and their stores are available in 10 countries globally and 16 factories worldwide. Because of their widespread global network, their impact on the sustainable fashion industry made more significant. In addition to calibrating their manufacturing process, company policies, materials and all CSR projects that we similarly saw in other companies, Patagonia is donating 1% of their revenue to “support planet” causes. They have goals to enhance their impact over support the planet and I am more than happy to write about those in future if you are really interested.

Patagonia is expected to be carbon neutral by 2025 and they support reforestation and regenerative agriculture to offset their carbon emission.
